OVERVIEW

The goal of the NPHN Surveillance Dashboard project was to develop and evaluate an interactive, web-based dashboard for portraying prison-based blood-borne virus surveillance data. The Dashboard includes data collected from various sources, including the AusHep study, APPs, and regularly collected service data from the NPHN.

Co-designed with stakeholders from across the correctional sector, the NPHN Surveillance Dashboard was developed as a mechanism to provide the prison sector with readily available data to inform key stakeholders in a more effective way than traditional academic methods, allow benchmarking across jurisdictions, and ultimately underpin advocacy for improvements in scale-up of testing, treatment, and prevention for hepatitis C and hepatitis B in the prison sector.

DEVELOPMENT

The Dashboard was co-designed with a key stakeholder group (n=45) over three rounds of mixed-methods semi-structured interviews. The key stakeholder group involved members from the Australian prison viral hepatitis sector, identified through the NPHN and partners. The interviews aimed to obtain stakeholder input into the design of the dashboard, visualisation of the data, as well as the utility and acceptability of the data and Dashboard.

  • First round (March – April 2024): conducted at the launch of basic drafts of the Dashboard  (‘wireframes’) with an aim to describe the user experience in both the look and feel of the initial draft Dashboard, as well as navigation through the draft Dashboard to access information. Stakeholder feedback was incorporated into the further development of the Dashboard.

  • Second round (June – July 2024): conducted at the launch of the full draft Dashboard with an aim to describe the user experience in both the look and feel of the full draft Dashboard, as well as navigation through the full draft Dashboard to access information. Stakeholder feedback was incorporated into the refinement of the Dashboard prior to official public launch.

  • Third round (planned for April 2025): conducted 2 months post-official public launch of the Dashboard with an aim to explore extent of access, uptake, utility, and acceptability of the Dashboard (and the surveillance data presented).
